The Job:
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Shepherd to take responsibility for the day to day management of a commercial sheep enterprise within a progressive mixed livestock farming business.
This role would suit an experienced shepherd looking to take ownership of a well-managed flock while becoming an integral part of a successful farming operation. You will be responsible for flock performance, breeding programmes, lambing, grazing management and supporting the wider livestock enterprise.

Key responsibilities:
- Take responsibility for the health, welfare and productivity of the sheep flock
- Manage all aspects of the breeding programme and outdoor lambing operations
- Monitor flock performance and implement best practice in animal husbandry
- Carry out routine health treatments and work closely with veterinary programmes
- Maintain accurate flock records and ensure compliance with assurance schemes and industry standards
- Plan and manage rotational grazing systems to maximise grass utilisation
- Monitor pasture quality and grazing performance throughout the season
- Support wider livestock operations including cattle and seasonal pig enterprises
- Supervise and support part-time staff during busy periods
- Operate agricultural machinery safely and efficiently
- Carry out general maintenance of fencing, machinery and farm infrastructure

The Company:
A progressive mixed livestock farm operating across a substantial acreage of hill ground, permanent pasture and improved grassland. The farming enterprise includes a closed flock of Cheviot × Easycare breeding ewes, a suckler cow herd, and a seasonal pig unit. The business is committed to high standards of livestock production, animal welfare, and sustainable land management, offering an excellent opportunity to join a supportive and forward thinking farming team.

The Candidate:
- Minimum five years’ practical sheep farming experience with proven experience managing breeding and lambing programmes
- Excellent stockmanship skills with a strong commitment to animal welfare and livestock performance
- Experience working with trained sheepdogs and confidence managing outdoor lambing systems
- Good understanding of rotational grazing, grassland management, and maximising forage utilisation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team, with strong organisation and communication skills
- Competent operating agricultural machinery and carrying out general farm maintenance; mixed livestock experience, record keeping, and telehandler/tractor qualifications would be advantageous

Candidate Requirements
All applicants must hold a minimum of an NVQ Level 2, Scottish NVQ Level 2, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the role applied for. Candidates must also have the legal right to work in the UK or hold a valid visa permitting employment.
