Graduate & Trainee Sector Recruitment in Agriculture

Specialist graduate and trainee recruitment across agriculture, farming, food, horticulture and equine.

Back to Job Industry Sectors

Agriculture needs new talent. The workforce is ageing, the sector is evolving fast and the businesses that will thrive over the next decade are the ones investing in the next generation now. But graduates entering the sector for the first time face a challenge most general job boards cannot solve. Agriculture is a specialist industry, and finding the right first role, with the right employer, in the right location, takes knowledge of a market most graduates have never navigated before.

Agricultural Recruitment Specialists (AgriRS) has been placing graduates and trainees across agriculture, farming, food, horticulture and equine for over 13 years. We work with both sides of this relationship: the businesses looking to bring in fresh talent and the individuals looking for the best possible start to their careers in the sector.

This guide covers the graduate and trainee landscape across UK agriculture, the kinds of roles available and how we can help, whether you are an employer building a pipeline or a graduate looking for your first role.

In Focus: Graduate Talent in UK Agriculture

Agriculture is significantly better at producing graduate talent than it is at retaining it. Harper Adams University, the leading specialist agricultural university in the UK and now ranked first in the world for agriculture and forestry employer reputation in the QS World Rankings, reports a graduate employment rate of over 97% for agriculture degree students. The Royal Agricultural University, Myerscough College, Writtle University College and a number of other specialist land-based institutions produce further cohorts every year. The pipeline exists.

The challenge is perception. Research published in 2025 found that only 4% of young people currently work in food and farming, despite the fact that nearly 4 in 10 say they would consider a career in the sector. The gap between interest and entry is mostly explained by poor awareness of the range of careers available and unclear routes in. The reality is that an agriculture or food science degree opens doors to agronomy, animal nutrition, food technology, precision farming, agricultural sales, grain trading, land agency, farm management and much more. These are well-paid, technically demanding, commercially rewarding careers. They are just not well publicised.

For employers, graduate recruitment represents a genuine opportunity. The agricultural workforce is ageing, with over a third of farm holders in England aged 65 or older and the total workforce declining year on year. The businesses investing in graduates and trainees now are building competitive advantage. Structured graduate programmes, BASIS and FACTS training pathways, agronomy foundation programmes and management trainee schemes across the agri-supply chain are producing some of the most capable professionals in the sector. AgriRS helps connect those businesses with the right people.

For Employers

What to Expect from Graduate & Trainee Recruitment

Graduate recruitment in agriculture requires a different approach to senior hiring. Getting to the right candidates means being active in that space, not waiting for applications to arrive.

Whether you are running a formal graduate scheme or looking to bring in your first trainee, we can help you structure the opportunity to attract someone who will genuinely build a career with you. The businesses that do this well tend to be the ones with the lowest staff turnover across the board.
