Herdsperson - Somerset - £40,000 + Accommodation

The Job:
We are seeking a competent and reliable Herdsperson to join our standalone milking unit in Somerset. This role is primarily focused on milking and associated herd management, overseeing a herd of approximately 330 cows, with 270–280 typically in milk.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the milking unit, including supervising the assistant milker and managing herd health and productivity. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on milking and herd management in a supportive, standalone environment.
The role is limited to milking and associated management; there is minimal opportunity for other farm work., The unit is a standalone milking facility; cows calve off-site.

Key Responsibilities:
- Milking cows efficiently and safely, maintaining high standards of hygiene
- Managing herd health and welfare, monitoring for signs of illness or distress
- Overseeing the assistant milker and coordinating daily milking operations
- Maintaining accurate records relating to milk production, health, and treatments
- Ensuring the milking unit and cow housing are kept clean and well-maintained
- Implementing herd management plans as required by the farm owner

The Candidate:
- Proven experience in milking and herd management
- Strong knowledge of dairy cow health, nutrition, and welfare practices
- Competent and reliable, with excellent organizational and supervisory skills
- Ability to work independently and take responsibility for herd management decisions
- Flexible and practical approach to problem-solving
