Trainee / Graduate Technical Ruminant Nutritionist
Trainee / Graduate Technical Ruminant Nutritionist - Cumbria (field-based, home-based within territory) - £35,000 + Benefits
The Job:
This is an entry-level role designed for someone looking to develop a career in ruminant nutrition. You may come from a herdsperson, assistant farm manager, livestock technician, or agriculture graduate background.
You will work closely with experienced nutritionists, gradually building technical knowledge, confidence, and responsibility while remaining closely connected to practical farming systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Support senior nutritionists with on-farm visits and client work
- Assist with ration formulation, forage analysis, and data collection
- Help monitor animal performance, health, and feed efficiency
- Learn to interpret milk records, growth data, and forage results
- Build relationships with farmers through regular farm contact
- Maintain accurate records, feeding plans, and reports
- Develop technical knowledge through training, mentoring, and practical experience
The Company:
We are recruiting for an independent ruminant nutrition consultancy working with progressive dairy and beef farms across Cumbria and the wider North of England / Scottish Borders. We pride ourselves on practical, farm-focused nutrition advice built on trust, performance, and long-term relationships.
The Candidate:
- Background in dairy or beef farming (e.g. herdsperson, assistant herd manager, stockperson, or similar)
- Strong interest in animal nutrition and livestock performance
- Practical understanding of UK ruminant production systems
- Good communication skills and confidence speaking with farmers
- Willingness to learn and develop technical and advisory skills
- Full UK driving licence
- Degree, HND, or college qualification in Agriculture, Animal Science, or related subject
- Experience with feed management, youngstock, or transition cows
- Basic IT skills (Excel, record keeping, data entry)
- Interest in progressing toward a fully qualified nutritionist role
The Package:
- Salary £28,000 – £35,000 per annum, dependent on experience
- Ongoing professional development (including support toward BASIS or equivalent)
- Structured mentoring from senior nutritionists
- Gradual increase in responsibility and client exposure
- Support toward professional qualifications (e.g. BASIS)
- Clear progression pathway to Technical Ruminant Nutritionist
