Executive search and senior recruitment across agriculture, farming, food, horticulture and equine.
Senior agricultural leadership is a small world. The Managing Directors, Commercial Directors, Operations Directors, General Managers and CEOs who run the UK's most significant agri-businesses, food companies, seed businesses and farming operations all know each other. Many have worked for the same companies at different points in their careers. When a business needs to change its leadership, the right candidate is almost never on a job board. They are employed, performing and not looking.
Agricultural Recruitment Specialists (AgriRS) has been placing senior and executive talent across agriculture, farming, food, horticulture and equine for over 13 years. Our executive search service carries a 100% placement success rate since 2012 on all retained assignments. That record is built on sector depth, relationship quality and a structured search process that consistently finds the right person, not just the most available one.
This page covers how our senior and executive recruitment works, the kinds of roles we place at this level and how to start a conversation, whether you are a business with a critical hire to make or a senior professional considering your next move.
Why Senior Recruitment in Agriculture Is Different
Most recruitment challenges in agriculture come down to a shortage of supply. At senior and executive level, the supply is there. It is the accessibility that is the problem. The best candidates for a Commercial Director role in an animal health business or a Managing Director position in a seed company are almost always in post, delivering well and unlikely to respond to a job advert. They may not even be visible on LinkedIn in a way that reflects their real seniority or reputation.
Reaching them takes genuine sector knowledge, long-standing relationships and a structured, confidential approach. It means knowing not just who the candidates are, but who they have worked for, what they have delivered, what they want next and whether the opportunity in front of them is the right step. A good senior search in agriculture is more like a private conversation between a trusted network than a conventional recruitment process.
That is exactly what our executive search service delivers. We have been part of this network since 2012. Our consultants do not just know their sectors. They know the people in them, at the level that matters for senior appointments.
How Our Executive Search Process Works
Our retained executive search service follows a structured nine-step process from brief to placement. Every assignment is project-managed by a single dedicated consultant who takes personal responsibility for delivery.
The Nine-Step Process
1. Brief and discovery: We take a detailed brief from the client, including role scope, reporting lines, organisational context, strategic objectives and the profile of the ideal candidate, including both technical requirements and cultural fit.
2. Market mapping: We map the candidate universe for the role, identifying every person in the sector who could credibly be considered, regardless of whether they are currently available or visible.
3. Longlisting: We approach candidates confidentially, assess their interest and suitability and compile a longlist for client review.
4. Shortlisting: Following client feedback on the longlist, we conduct deeper assessment of the most promising candidates and present a shortlist of typically three to five people.
5. Interview coordination: We manage the interview process, preparing both client and candidate, coordinating schedules and gathering feedback at each stage.
6. Assessment support: Where required, we provide psychometric and skills profiling to support the final decision.
7. Offer management: We manage the offer process, acting as an honest broker between client and candidate on package, notice period and start date.
8. Placement and onboarding support: We remain in contact through the notice period and early weeks of the placement to ensure a successful start.
9. Follow-up: We check in at 90 days and six months to confirm the placement is working well for both parties.
The retained fee structure reflects the commitment this process requires. Thirty per cent of the anticipated fee is paid on engagement to secure the search. A further thirty per cent is paid at shortlist stage. The remainder is paid on placement. We have completed every retained search we have started since 2012. That record is not an accident.

For Employers
Starting a Senior Search with AgriRS
The most important first step is a proper conversation. Before we can do anything useful, we need to understand the role in real depth: not just the job title and responsibilities, but the context. What is the business trying to achieve? Why is this role open? What has worked or not worked in this position before? What does success look like at six months and two years? Without that grounding, any search is just guesswork.
We are direct about what we find in the market. If the candidate profile is very narrow, we will say so. If the package is not competitive for the seniority of role, we will tell you before you invest in a search. Our repeat business rate is above 80%, and a significant part of that is because clients trust our candour as much as our network.
How We Work with Employers
Retained executive search: The right approach for senior, specialist or confidential appointments. A single dedicated consultant manages the full process. 100% success rate since 2012.
Contingency search: For senior roles where retained search is not required. Proactive candidate approach, no placement, no fee.
Market intelligence: Salary benchmarking and candidate landscape analysis to inform the brief before a search begins.
Candidate profiling: Psychometric and leadership assessments to support final-stage decision-making on shortlisted candidates.

For Senior Candidates
Exploring Your Next Senior Move
If you are a senior professional in agriculture, food, horticulture or equine, you are probably not actively looking. You are performing well, you are known in your sector and you are rightly cautious about who you speak to about career conversations. That is completely understood.
We work on a confidential basis with senior professionals exploring their options. We never share your details without your knowledge and explicit consent. A first conversation with us costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Its purpose is simply to understand where you are, what you might be open to and whether anything we are working on, now or in the future, could be worth a further conversation.
What We Offer Senior Candidates
Complete confidentiality: Your details are never shared without your explicit consent, at any stage.
Access to unlisted roles: Most of the senior roles we fill are never advertised. Being known to us means being in the frame for opportunities that never reach the market.
Market insight: We can give you a frank view of the candidate market at your level, including what competing employers are offering and where demand is strongest.
Long-term relationship: We are not trying to place you quickly. We are building a relationship that serves you over the course of a career.
