In Focus: The UK Agronomy, Fertilisers, Crop Protection & Agrochemicals Sector
The UK crop protection chemicals market was valued at approximately £1.15 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at around 5% annually through to 2034. Add the fertiliser and crop nutrition markets and the total agrochemicals sector is considerably larger, with the broader UK agrochemicals market forecast to approach £3.3 billion by 2035. Behind those figures sit 85 or more active pesticide and agrochemical manufacturing businesses in the UK, alongside a wide distribution and advisory network that reaches every arable, horticultural and grassland farm in the country.
The sector is changing fast. Fungicides account for over half of crop protection product sales in the UK, driven by persistent septoria and mildew pressure on winter wheat. But biopesticides are growing at nearly 5% annually as the regulatory environment shifts toward lower-residue products and the government's Pesticides National Action Plan, published in March 2025, makes biopesticide development a stated priority alongside precision application technology. Syngenta's Jealott's Hill facility in Berkshire, one of the world's largest crop protection research sites, employs over 800 people and is a signal of the sector's long-term commitment to UK science. For hiring businesses, the central challenge is qualified advisers. The pool of BASIS and FACTS-qualified agronomists in the UK is shrinking as experienced consultants retire faster than the training pipeline can replace them. Competition for good candidates is intense, particularly in arable-heavy regions such as East Anglia, the East Midlands and Yorkshire. A field-based agronomist role with the right package can attract strong interest, but only if you reach the right people. Most of the best candidates are employed and not browsing job boards.

Advisory, Consultancy and Field-Based Roles
Agronomist/Field Agronomist: Advising farmers on crop nutrition, protection programmes, variety selection and integrated pest management, typically BASIS and/or FACTS qualified.
Independent Agronomist/Crop Consultant: Self-employed or consultancy-based adviser managing a portfolio of grower clients, often with a strong reputation built over many years.
Trainee Agronomist: Entry-level advisory role, usually working toward BASIS and FACTS qualifications while supporting senior agronomists on field visits.

Area Sales Manager (Crop Protection): Managing a sales territory for a manufacturer or distributor, building relationships with merchants, cooperatives and large farming businesses.
Technical Sales Specialist: Bridging sales and science, providing in-depth product support and field demonstrations to customers and agronomists.
Product Manager/Product Development Manager: Commercial and technical management of a product portfolio within a manufacturer or distributor, including pricing, positioning and launch.
Fertiliser Trader/Commodity Trader: Buying and selling fertiliser and crop nutrition products, often within a merchant, cooperative or trading house.
